At first watch, Gin Lee’s (李幸倪) new music video for her latest single Very Strong (很堅強) might be confusing to some because it offers little context. However, the scenes that unfold across the four-minute short film are clues that will aid the watcher, who becomes an active participant of the guesswork the minute that the video started, to put the pieces together.

The music video begins with a visibly upset Gin, who is low-spirited because she had just quarrelled with her boyfriend. The reason behind their fall-out is never explicitly revealed— however, through snippets of the past, there are reasons to believe that her best friend may have harboured feelings for her lover. For example, the disappointment shows on the best friend’s face when she was cast aside by the couple at the bottom of a stairwell. The slight cheerfulness that taints her demeanour in the aftermath of a playful interaction with Gin’s boyfriend is also a dead giveaway.

However, when Gin leans into her best friend for comfort towards the end of the music video, it is evident that the best friend had not come between the couple. The plot twist here being that the best friend is the one who’s “very strong” even though it had all along been assumed that Gin is the female lead, and thus the reference of the lyrics.

Written by Riley Lam (林若寧) and composed by Eric Kwok (郭偉亮), the lyrics speak of a girl and her unrequired love. She is strong and she is tough, however, she also believes that it is these kinds of stereotypically unfeminine traits that render her unlovable to the man that she has fallen head over heels for. But, instead of faking a delicate front to feed his ego and win his love, she realises that she is better off without a man like him.
